Self Regulation for Charitable Fundraising in UK
The Institute of Fundraising is the professional body which represents all professional fundraisers operating in the United Kingdom. For example if a body is employed to work on behalf of a charity in supplying paid fundraisers to undertake street fundraising campaigns this body must be a member of the Institute of Fundraising.
The purpose of the Institute of Fundraising is to improve the highest standards of fundraising and to support and develop the knowledge and standards of all those bodies which undertake fundraising obligations.
Members of the Institute of Fundraising are required to adhere to the Code of Conduct for fundraisers in the UK.
All fundraisers operating in the United Kingdom under the Institute of Fundraising must follow the Code of Conduct for Fundraisers which is based on the following conditions:
Professional Conduct
Professional competence
Fundraising Competence
Confidentiality
The Fundraising Promise
All members of the Institute of Fundraising must ensure the following:
That they conduct themselves at all times with compete integrity, honesty and trust
That they respect the dignity of their profession and ensure their actions enhance not only their reputation as fundraisers but also the Institute of Fundraising
That they act according to the highest standards and visions of their organisation and conscience
That they advocate adherence to application laws and regulations within their organisation
That they avoid the appearance of any criminal offence or professional misconduct
That they do not use their authority for personal gain
That they comply with the laws of England and Wales which apply to their professional activities
That they do not exploit any relationship with a donor, prospect, employee or volunteer for personal gain
That they act at all time in an honest fashion and that no potential donors or existing donors are misled
That they do not knowingly provide false or misleading information in the course of their professional duties
All members of the Institute of Fundraising are expected to act in accordance with the following:
To strive to maintain and apply a high level of competence to the conduct of the work entrusted to them
To improve their professional knowledge and skills in order that their performance improves
Try to ensure that all who work with them have appropriate levels of competence for the effective discharge of their duties
Full and certified members of the Institute of Fundraising are required to show full competence across the following areas:
Establishing and communicating a case for support
Planning and monitoring how resources are allocated across various projects
Research, analysis and the development of strategies
Full and certified members of the Institute of Fundraising must ensure that they comply with the following requirements in relation to the principle of confidentiality:
Ensuring that they shall not disclose or make use of information provided to them in confidence – however, there is an exception relating to this as certain information may be used in a certain way as required by statute
Ensure that they do not disclose any information from their employers or clients, the public who donate or any other source without the prior consent of that individual
Adhere to all of the data protection principles specified by the Data Protection Act 1998
Full and certified members of the Institute of Fundraising must ensure that they effectively promote and adhere to all of the conditions imposed by the fundraising promise.
